On Whitefish Mountain

Celebrate the end of the ski season at this wild and wacky event. The competition is open to all competitors 21yrs and older, and everyone is welcome to come watch this spectacular winter Finale. The pond skimming celebrates the beginning of spring and the end of another great ski season.

The Pond Skim. The Slush Cup. The Water Ride. Call it what you like, pond skimming at ski resorts is a spring tradition that dates back as far as skiing itself. For the un intimidated, pond skimming involves brave skiers and snowboarders attempting to cross a long, cold, often icy pond; the objective being to make it to the other side without getting wet. Some achieve this objective, but the majority do not. And therein lies the entertainment value of pond skimming!

Contestants in way out costumes ski down the face of the mountain in an attempt to skim across the turquoise pond, extra points are given for splashing the crowd and making it across a trick box at the end of the water.

If pond skimming in all its glory is something that interests you this spring, be sure to check out the events calendar at your local resort. Most ski resorts hold pond skimming events, often with very low entry fees. Costumes are always encouraged, as is bribing the judges. Wetsuits are optional (although not a half bad idea!).
